Health Concerns
I know there are some concerns about the new influenza strain. I want to share with you what the school is doing to protect our children and our staff from being infected as well as suggestions on how to keep healthy:
• High touch areas in school will be disinfected daily – desks, doorknobs, etc.
• We are receiving regular updates from the Salt Lake Valley Health Department as well as from the District Office. Parents will be notified immediately if there is a concern that may affect students/staff at Southland. The District Web site will have up-to-date information.
• Salt Lake Valley Health Dept has issued the following information:
- As of today, 4/30/09 there are no confirmed cases of swine flu in Utah. The Salt Lake Valley Health Department is carefully monitoring all reported concerns.
- Flu viruses are spread mostly from person to person through coughing or sneezing of people with influenza. Sometimes people may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.
- Persons may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 5 days after becoming sick.
- Symptoms of flu-like illness are:
• fever
• cough
• sore throat
• headache
• chills
• severe body aches
• fatigue
• and possibly vomiting and diarrhea.
- Following the simple steps below will prevent influenza related illness:
• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and thrown the tissue away when finished.
• Wash hands often with sop and water and especially after coughing or sneezing.
• Use an alcohol hand cleaner if water is not immediately available.
• Do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth since germs are spread this way.
• Keep surfaces (tables, doorknobs, telephones, etc. ) clean by wiping them frequently with a household disinfectant according to directions on the product label.
- If you are sick limit your contact with other people as much as possible.
- Do NOT go to work or school if ill.
- Contact your medical provider for recommendations and possible treatment.

Did You Know?
Did you know that Southland Elementary School is a Brigham Young University Partnership School?
What this means is:
• You will see new faces at our school on a regular basis. We help to train new teachers coming into the profession. Southland Elementary has some of the best teachers in the profession. We have been chosen to help train teachers:
- who are just deciding to go into the field of education.
- who are learning to teach and will teach selected lessons in selected subject areas to students under the direction of the classroom teacher.
- who are doing their student teaching.
- who are first year teachers and will do an internship under the direction and tutelage of a full time BYU Facilitator assigned to the school. These first year teachers are observed and given help on a regular basis by the Facilitator as well as their instructors from BYU (CFA, Liaison, professors).
Have you ever wondered WHY there are so many “assistant principals” at Southland the past four years and why they only stay for a short time?
• Since becoming a principal Mrs. Summers has been asked to train/mentor new and upcoming principals. In the past four years she has had the opportunity to work with and train twelve principals who are completing their graduate programs to become administrators. Every intern principal she has worked with in prior years has obtained an administrative position.
• Southland Elementary does not qualify for an Assistant Principal (enrollment must be over 1,000 students for a half time assistant principal and over 1,200 student for a full time assistant principal) so these “assistant principals” aren’t really assistants but are educators who are in training to become administrators. They are interns. Part of their training includes shadowing, which means that the intern principal will shadow the principal. They will attend meetings and have as many experiences as they can to prepare them to become administrators. Sometimes they will direct or lead activities. The intern principal shares the office with Mrs. Summers, so often when you come by there will be someone in the office with her. If you wish to talk to Mrs. Summers alone, just let her know. If you don’t mind the intern being there, he/she will stay to learn about different interactions.
• Intern principals come from various colleges and programs. They are assigned to Mrs. Summers by the university and district human resources department. This year we will have four intern principals at the school:
- Mark Burge was here from August – November
- Mckay Robinson was here from November – March
- Patty Bowen was here in March (she got a job at Union Middle School with an April 2nd start date so she will finish out here internship there but she should have been at Southland from March – June)
- Scott Roskelly will be coming to Southland June, July, and August 2009.

Calendar Change and Tracking
The 2008/2009 Track Calendar has school ending on July 3rd. This is a state and federal holiday. Superintendent Newbold petitioned the State Board of Education to allow Jordan School District to conclude their final day on July 2nd. This petition has been granted. Tracks B, C, and D will officially end the 2008/2009 school year at 3:25 p.m. on Thursday, July 2, 2009. The building will be closed on July 3rd.
Just a reminder that track change requests were due last Friday, March 20th. If you have not turned in your request please do so now. We will be re-tracking the entire school. Traditionally Southland has re-tracked the school every other year. Many schools re-track every year. There are a few schools that re-track every three years. Re-tracking needs to take place as class size in a grade level becomes out of balance. Out of balance results as students change grade level, students move in or move out. Re-tracking allows us to balance class sizes.
I also wanted to remind you that teachers take role via computer in their classroom until 8:40 a.m. Students do not need to check into the office until after 8:40 a.m. There is a door unlocked on each side of the building for students to quickly enter the building and go directly to their classroom. The set of doors with the black box between the doors has one of those doors unlocked. It is usually the right hand door. We encourage students to use their grade level doors until 8:40 a.m. After 8:40 a.m. all doors are locked except the front door and students do need to stop in the office to check in.
Kids Marketplace for 3rd grade will be taking place on Wednesday, March 25th. This is a fun filled event where 3rd graders apply life skills. Thanks to ALL the parents who have volunteered to help us with this activity. It is a highlight of the third grade student’s year.
The Third/Fourth grade Science Fair will be held this week. Science Fair Projects will be on display for those who would like to view them all day on Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Not all students will be in the gym the entire time. Teachers should be sending home a note letting parents know what time their students will be in the gym.

March 2009
Dear Parents and Students,
I wanted to update you on the programs and things we’ve accomplished so far this school year and the upcoming events we have planned. Please let me know if there are additional programs you would like to see taking place.
Southland’s Goal:
Each student will obtain one years growth
Our goal is for each student to obtain a years growth no matter what level he or she is on – above grade level, on grade level, or below grade level. In order to accomplish this we have been and will be focusing on the following areas:
Curriculum:
Reading – Each grade has a guided reading block of 80 minutes. During this time all students in the grade level are engaged in reading and language arts activities. Students in the grade are divided up based on their guided reading level. The reading instruction they receive during this time is at the student’s instructional level. Teachers work with students in small groups. Students may also be involved in reading activities at their independent level when not working in a small group with the teacher. This inclusion model of reading is designed to provide differentiated teaching instruction so students at all levels are instructed on their appropriate reading level instead of a teacher teaching at “grade level” leaving those below grade level floundering and those above grade level bored.
Math – We are involved in a school-wide Math Grant Initiative with Brigham Young University (BYU). We are in our second year of working with BYU and district math specialists to receive instruction in research based math instruction. Teachers are looking at their math instruction and how it impacts students learning. BYU gathered data last school year and continues to gather data this year. So far the results of the gathered data are showing Southland students to be making positive gains. The results of the research will be released when the study completes at the end of this school year.
Science – All grade levels are studying the scientific method at their appropriate level. Fifth and sixth grade students participated in a school Science Fair. We had twelve projects that went on to the Jordan School District Science Fair. Of those twelve projects, ten of them will go on to the Central Utah Regional Science Fair at BYU March 25th where students may earn scholarships and awards.
Third and fourth grade students will be holding their Science Fair at Southland on March 26th and 27th. The District Science Fair for third and fourth graders will be held April 23rd and 24th.
Kindergarten, First, and Second grade students will participate in a Science Fair on June 26th.
Fine Arts (Music, Dance, Drama, Art):
• Repertory Dance Theatre has been here this year working with our 1st and 2nd grade students. They also did an assembly for all of the students and conducted an in-service for teachers after school for all grade levels on how to incorporate movement into the classroom.
• Southland Musical – “Use Your Imagination” 4th – 6th graders performed
• Springville Art Museum conducted a three-day art education event involving all students. Classes participated in an art gallery tour and figure drawing with qualified docents.
• ARTS assembly by Salzberg Echo
• Orchestra Program (Band next year as well.)
• Utah Symphony – 5th and 4th graders
• PTA Reflections
• Sounds of Music K-6 (painting to music)
P.E.:
• Gold Medal School Activities
Enrichment Activities:
• Christmas Choir
• Mighty Authors – K-6 all students/parents/teachers have online access to publish their writing.
• Spelling Bee
• Geography Bee
• D.A.R.E – 5th grade
• Reflections
• Author Brad Wilcox did a writing activity with students K-6
• Living Aquarium
• Story Teller
• Ken Garff Road to Success Program
•
Upcoming Enrichment Activities:
• Monster Math
• Talented Young Authors
• Kids Market Place – 3rd grade
• Biz Town – 5th grade
• Junior Achievement
• Mad Scientist
• Evening of the Arts
• Barnes and Noble Book Fair
• BYU Folk Dancers
• Space Trailer – 6th grade. Each year we try to enroll in Space Camp (limited space). The space trailer is sent when a school is not selected for space camp.
• Field Trips
ISQ Survey: (Utah State University)
• This survey will be coming out in March. Please fill it out and send it back. We are interested in your feelings, suggestions, and feedback. Many of the things we have done this year are based on last year’s feedback from the survey. Let us know how we’ve been doing and what you would like us to do differently.
If you have any suggestions or questions, please contact me! I appreciate all your help and support.
